THE FIRST READING
A jacket is read before it is examined. The shoulder establishes width. The lapel directs the eye. The button stance locates the waist. Together, those decisions create a structure around the body rather than decoration upon it.
This is why two jackets can both fit and still communicate completely different things. Fit answers whether cloth follows the body. Proportion answers whether the composition works.
A RELATIONSHIP OF LINES
The upper line, the waist and the jacket length cannot be judged alone. A stronger shoulder changes how the waist appears. A lower button changes how long the torso feels. A lapel that is isolated from the wearer’s scale can make an otherwise clean jacket feel unresolved.
RESTRAINT
The best engineering is rarely the loudest element. Its work is felt in balance, posture and ease. The result should look inevitable—even when every millimetre was a decision.
